Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs BackThe smart screen flickered to life, illuminating the dark conference room with a bright, crisp high-definition video feed.

It wasn't the security footage from the living room that Vanessa had attempted to wipe. It was something far more damning.

It was a recorded phone call, complete with crystal-clear audio waveforms, timestamped at 11:45 PM the previous night.

“...you promised me full immunity and five million dollars once the board ousts him,” Vanessa’s voice rang out clearly through the high-end boardroom speakers. “I gave you the encrypted drive with all his private notes. Now clean up your end of the bargain, Julian, or I swear I’ll tell the federal prosecutors everything about how you funded my infiltration!”

Julian’s smug smirk vanished instantly. Color drained from his face as he stared at the screen in absolute horror.

A second voice on the recording—unequivocally Julian Thorne’s—responded: “Shut up, you fool. Just keep your mouth shut until the board meeting tomorrow morning. Once Roberto is stripped of his CEO title, the payout will clear.”

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Board members stood up from their chairs, shouting in disbelief, glaring at Julian with undisguised fury.

Julian leaped to his feet, slamming his hands onto the table. "This is a fake! Deepfake audio! Fabricated by a desperate man trying to cover up his own corporate negligence!"

"Is it, Julian?" Roberto asked smoothly, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. He walked slowly around the table until he was standing face-to-face with his stunned rival.

Roberto tapped his wristwatch. "At 11:46 PM last night, my head of private intelligence, working in conjunction with federal cyber-crime units, intercepted the encrypted cloud transfer between Vanessa Moreau’s burner phone and Julian Thorne’s private server. Not only do we have the full audio recording of your conspiracy, but we also have the digital ledger proving the wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars you sent to her alias two years ago to orchestrate her entry into my home."

Julian’s breath hitched. He looked around the room, realizing too late that he had walked directly into a well-laid execution chamber. Roberto hadn't been caught off guard by the leak; he had anticipated it, baited it, and watched them swallow the hook whole.

"Federal marshals are currently downstairs executing a search warrant at Thorne Enterprises headquarters," Roberto continued, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "And as for Vanessa... well, let's just say her flight to the Cayman Islands has been grounded by a freeze on all her offshore accounts."

Julian stumbled backward, knocking his chair over against the mahogany floor. "You... you set me up."

"No, Julian," Roberto said softly, leaning down so only his rival could hear. "You tried to weaponize my family against me. You thought because I cared for my blind daughter, I was weak. You forgot one simple rule of business:"

Roberto straightened up, his eyes flashing with ice.

"Never mistake a father’s love for vulnerability."
