Chapter 12 - The Hidden VaultDetermined to trace the restricted call, Katherine spent the rest of the night locked in the compliance floor’s secure archive room. Since her promotion, she had clearance to access level-four classified files, but certain legacy vaults required manual cryptographic keys.

At 3:00 AM, Marcus Bell slipped into the dim archive room, carrying two cups of black coffee.

"I saw your light on from the parking garage," Marcus said, setting a cup beside her terminal. "What are you hunting for at this hour?"

"The caller was right, Marcus," Katherine said without looking up from her monitor, her eyes reflecting rows of scrolling hex codes. "Bracken Ridge was a decoy. Look at this routing path from five years ago, long before Reginald got involved. The dummy corporations weren't registered by him. They were created by a parent entity called Apex Horizon Holdings."

Marcus leaned over, squinting at the screen. "Apex Horizon? That’s impossible. That firm was liquidated during the 2018 municipal infrastructure bailout. Paul Hargrove personally signed off on the liquidation audit."

Katherine turned slowly to face him, the blue light casting sharp shadows across her face. "Or... it was never liquidated. It was rebranded, sheltered inside First Meridian’s own asset portfolio."

Marcus inhaled sharply. "If Hargrove or the executive board covered up Apex Horizon, you're not just looking at corporate embezzlement anymore. You're looking at institutional money-laundering at the highest level."

"Exactly," Katherine whispered, pulling a physical master ledger from the bottom drawer. "And the signature authorizing the shelter isn't Reginald's. It belongs to Jonathan Sterling—the CEO of First Meridian Bank."
