Chapter 13 - The Golden TrapBy sunrise, Katherine and Marcus had mapped out the entire financial artery connecting Apex Horizon Holdings to First Meridian’s executive reserve accounts. The scale of the corruption was staggering—hundreds of millions of dollars funneled through dummy municipal contracts, shielding illegal political donations and international shell transactions.

Before Katherine could formalize her internal whistleblowing report, her office intercom chimed.
"Ms. Whitfield," the crisp voice of the executive secretary announced. "Mr. Sterling and Mr. Hargrove request your presence in the executive boardroom immediately. A priority audit review."
Katherine exchanged a long, resolute glance with Marcus. "The trap has been sprung."
"Be careful, Kath," Marcus warned, his hand gripping her desk edge. "If they know you've accessed the Apex files, they won't hesitate to terminate your clearance and lock you out of the system."
"Let them try," Katherine said coldly. "I’ve already backed up every encrypted file to an external, off-site server."
She smoothed down her cream blouse and straight gray skirt, straightened her posture, and walked down the long corridor toward the top-floor boardroom. The heavy mahogany double doors swung open automatically as she approached.

Inside, CEO Jonathan Sterling sat at the head of the glass table, his silver hair immaculate and his expression chillingly polite. Paul Hargrove sat to his right, nervously tapping a Montblanc pen against the mahogany surface.
"Katherine," Sterling said, smiling without warmth. "Please, sit down. We need to talk about your recent career trajectory."
