Chapter 22 - The Ghost on the BoardKatherine spent the entire weekend locked in the private basement archive of First Meridian Bank, cross-referencing Sarah Lindqvist’s documents with the encrypted archives she had seized during the federal raid. The numbers didn't lie, but they told a terrifyingly complex story.

Apex Horizon wasn't just a domestic money-laundering vehicle; it was part of a global financial network spanning Zurich, the Cayman Islands, and London. And the ultimate beneficiary hiding behind a labyrinth of offshore trusts was Arthur Pendelton—the billionaire venture capitalist and founding chairman of First Meridian’s international oversight committee.

On Monday morning, Marcus Bell walked into her office, carrying his usual cup of black coffee, but his expression was grim.

"Kath, I ran background checks on Pendelton’s private holdings," Marcus said, closing the door behind him and locking it. "His private equity firm has been siphoning millions from our emerging market portfolios for the last six months, right under our noses. If the federal regulators find out this is happening under your watch, they won't just question our security—they’ll dissolve the bank."

"Pendelton thinks he's untouchable because he appointed half the federal oversight committee," Katherine said coldly, her eyes fixed on her dual monitors where the international routing codes flashed in brilliant red warnings. "He thinks I’m just a domestic compliance analyst who got lucky with a cheating husband."

"What's our play?" Marcus asked, leaning over the desk. "If we go to the DOJ without absolute proof of his direct authorization, his legal team will bury us before lunchtime."

Katherine stood up, smoothing the fabric of her tailored charcoal skirt. Her gaze was as sharp as steel.

"We don't go to the DOJ yet, Marcus. We lay a trap. Pendelton has scheduled an emergency board meeting for Wednesday afternoon to review the European expansion. We are going to let him walk right into his own audit."
