Chapter 16 - The Empire CrumblesWithin forty-eight hours, the collapse of First Meridian Bank dominated national news headlines. Federal receivers stepped in to freeze all executive assets, while emergency regulators worked to secure depositor accounts.

Katherine was named Interim Chief Executive Officer of First Meridian’s transitional restructuring committee—a temporary appointment mandated by the federal oversight board to clean house and rebuild the bank from its toxic foundations.

It was late Friday evening. The executive floor was once again quiet, save for the rhythmic clicking of keyboard keys.

Marcus walked into her expansive corner office, carrying a bottle of vintage champagne and two crystal flutes.

"Well, Madam CEO," Marcus said with an amused grin, setting the glasses down on her polished mahogany desk. "The board of governors just ratified your permanent appointment. You're officially running the entire institution."

Katherine stared at the champagne bottle, a quiet, genuine laugh escaping her lips. She leaned back in her high-backed leather chair, feeling a profound sense of closure wash over her.

"I remember when Reginald told me that one demanding career in a marriage was enough," Katherine murmured, shaking her head.

"What a fool," Marcus said, popping the cork with a satisfying soft hiss and pouring the golden liquid into the flutes. "He had no idea who he was sharing a home with."

"No," Katherine agreed, raising her glass to clink against Marcus's. "He didn't. But neither did I, until I finally decided to look closer."
