Chapter 26 - A New ProposalTwo months after the Pendelton crisis, First Meridian Bank held its annual executive gala at the grand ballroom of the Chicago Hilton. The room was glittering with crystal chandeliers, elegant evening gowns, and black tuxedos. Leaders from across the national banking sector had gathered to celebrate the bank’s miraculous recovery and to formally announce Katherine Whitfield as the permanent Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer.

As the applause died down after her opening address, Katherine stepped down from the podium and walked toward the quiet terrace overlooking Lake Michigan.

The glass doors slid open behind her, and Marcus stepped out, holding two crystal flutes of sparkling water with a twist of lemon.

"You knocked it out of the park, Madam CEO," Marcus said with a warm smile, handing her a glass. "The board is officially eating out of the palm of your hand."

Katherine took the glass, clinking it lightly against his. "Thanks to you, Marcus. I couldn't have survived the Apex and Pendelton investigations without your partnership."

"Partnership," Marcus repeated softly, a gentle, thoughtful look crossing his face. He hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Speaking of partnerships... Katherine, the federal oversight committee is stable, the bank is secure, and for the first time in your life, you have total autonomy."

Katherine turned to look at him, sensing the shift in his tone. "Where are you going with this, Marcus?"

"I'm not going anywhere," Marcus said, stepping a little closer. "Not unless you want me to. But I wanted to ask you something—not as your Chief Operating Officer, and not as your colleague. Would you have dinner with me tomorrow night? Just the two of us. No spreadsheets, no fraud investigations, no corporate boards."
