Chapter 6 - A New HorizonTwo weeks later, the financial news columns carried a sprawling investigative piece detailing the collapse of Whitfield Development and the sudden federal inquiry into its primary contractor accounts. Though Katherine’s name was deliberately kept out of the public press releases for compliance security, inside First Meridian Bank, everything had changed.
Katherine sat in her new office on the executive floor. The room was twice the size of her old cubicle, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that flooded the space with warm afternoon sunlight. On her mahogany desk sat a heavy glass nameplate: Katherine Whitfield – Senior Vice President of Compliance.
Marcus Bell knocked lightly on the open door before stepping inside, holding two cups of gourmet coffee. He placed one on her desk and smiled.
"Word on the street is that your ex-husband’s assets have been completely frozen by the federal receiver," Marcus said, leaning against the doorframe. "Chloe Vance resigned from his firm and lawyered up yesterday morning."
"Predictable," Katherine said, taking a sip of her coffee. "People who build lives on deception rarely stick around when the foundation cracks."
"How are you holding up?" Marcus asked, his tone softening with genuine concern. "Divorce proceedings, corporate fallout, restructuring an entire department... it's a lot for two weeks."
"I've never felt lighter, Marcus," Katherine replied sincerely. "For a long time, I thought protecting my marriage meant hiding my own capabilities. Turns out, true peace is just letting go of things that require you to shrink."
Her phone chimed on the desk. An automated notification from her lawyer: Property settlement finalized. Primary residence transferred solely to Katherine Whitfield.
She smiled faintly, locking the phone screen.

"Thank you, Marcus," Katherine replied. "Now, let’s pull the quarterly audit files. There’s a suspicious portfolio in industrial real estate that needs our attention."
