Chapter 8 - The Final SignatureThe following morning, Katherine walked into her executive office to find a thick manila envelope resting on her desk. There was no return address, but the handwriting on the label was unmistakably Reginald’s legal counsel.

She sliced it open with a letter opener. Inside was a single document: the final uncontested divorce settlement, signed by Reginald at the bottom of every page with a shaky, defeated hand. He had surrendered every remaining claim to the house, his remaining personal accounts, and any residual interest in the corporate assets.

She picked up her fountain pen—a gift she had bought herself for her promotion—and signed her name on the final line.

Just then, Marcus buzzed through her desk intercom. "Katherine? Paul Hargrove is on line two for you. He wants to know if you'll join the executive committee panel for the upcoming national banking conference next month."

Katherine looked at the signed divorce decree, then glanced out her panoramic window at the bustling city below where the sun was finally breaking through the morning clouds.

"Tell Paul," Katherine said into the intercom with a confident smile, "that I’d be delighted."
