Chapter 4 - The Untangling WebBy mid-afternoon, the fallout from the bank freeze had escalated beyond Reginald’s worst nightmares. Paul Hargrove, the Regional Director, had formally stepped in, reviewing Katherine’s dossier alongside bank legal counsel.

Katherine sat in Hargrove’s spacious corner office overlooking the city skyline. Reginald sat opposite her, flanked by a high-priced corporate defense attorney he had frantically summoned downtown.

"Mr. Whitfield," Hargrove said, closing the massive file folder with a heavy thud. "The internal review confirms Ms. Whitfield’s findings. The accounts in question show clear evidence of asset concealment and fraudulent routing designed to bypass federal tax liabilities and corporate disclosures. Furthermore, because these accounts were tied to your personal guarantee, personal bankruptcy and criminal referral are distinct possibilities."

Reginald’s attorney leaned forward, clearing his throat. "Mr. Hargrove, surely we can handle this quietly. My client is willing to dissolve the subsidiary, return the funds to the primary corporate holdings, and—"

"There will be no quiet resolutions," Katherine interrupted, her voice crisp and authoritative. She looked directly at her husband, who stared back with a mixture of terror and utter disbelief. "Because Reginald didn't just steal from his own company. He used corporate funds to purchase real estate under a secondary entity—an entity co-registered with Chloe Vance."

Reginald flinched violently. "You checked the real estate holdings?"

"I checked everything," Katherine said. "Every asset you accumulated while telling me that one demanding career in a marriage was enough. It turns out you were right, Reginald. One of us was working hard, and the other was working a scam."

Hargrove looked between them, finally recognizing the immense professional competence Katherine had quietly masked for years. He cleared his throat. "Given the personal conflict of interest, Ms. Whitfield, we are relieving you of duties for the rest of the day. Take administrative leave. We’ll handle the legal handoff from here."

"Thank you, Paul," Katherine said, gathering her notepad. As she walked past Reginald, she didn't look at him once.
