Chapter 5 - The Empty NestWhen Katherine unlocked the front door of their house, the silence felt different. It wasn't the heavy, oppressive quiet of a marriage dying a slow death; it was the crisp, clean stillness of a fresh start.

She walked up to the master bedroom and began packing. She didn't take much—just her personal clothes, her mother's vintage gold pocket watch, and her secure digital drives containing the full archive of her financial research.
As she zipped her suitcase, the front door downstairs flew open. Heavy, hurried footsteps thudded up the stairs.
Reginald burst into the bedroom, disheveled, his tie crooked and his eyes wild. "Katherine! You can't just walk out. We need to talk about this rationally. If you go through with the corporate divorce filing, I lose everything—the company, the house, my reputation!"
"Your reputation was built on sand, Reginald," Katherine said calmly, lifting her suitcase off the bed and setting it on the floor.
"I'll give you whatever you want!" he pleaded, stepping closer, his hands gesturing frantically. "The house, the savings, full control of whatever you want! Just call Hargrove. Tell him it was a clerical error. Tell him you made a mistake!"
Katherine stopped and looked at him—really looked at him. For ten years, she had believed he was the formidable one, the successful entrepreneur holding their lives together while she quietly supported him from the shadows. Stripped of his stolen capital and his corporate facade, he was nothing more than a frightened, small-minded fraud.
"I haven't made a mistake in ten years, Reginald," she said softly. "The only mistake I made was letting you convince me I wasn't capable of standing on my own."
She brushed past him toward the stairs.

"Where are you going?" he shouted down the hallway. "You can't do this to me!"
"Ask Chloe," Katherine called back without turning around. "She seems to know all about your future plans."
