Chapter 2 - The Audit TrapBy 7:00 AM the next morning, Katherine was back at her desk on the compliance floor, though her focus had shifted entirely from corporate oversight to premeditated exposure. Marcus Bell walked past carrying two steaming paper cups of coffee, pausing when he saw her intensely typing.

"You look like you haven't slept, Kath," Marcus noted, setting a cup on her blotter. "Still chewing on that Bracken Ridge file?"

"I'm expanding the scope," Katherine said smoothly, not looking up from her monitor. "I found inconsistencies that go beyond the municipal contracts. We need to freeze all associated routing numbers immediately."

Marcus frowned, leaning against the divider. "That requires Regional Director sign-off. Paul Hargrove has been hesitant to touch mid-tier contractors without concrete proof of direct embezzlement. Do you have the definitive paper trail?"

"I have the genesis file," Katherine replied, sliding a flash drive across the desk. "Every shadow transfer, every dummy corporation registered in Delaware, and the personal guarantor signatures matching those accounts."

Marcus glanced at the drive, then up at her face, sensing the terrifying calm in her demeanor. "Whose signature is on the guarantor line, Katherine?"

"My husband's," she said evenly.

Marcus stared at her in stunned silence for three full seconds before whistling softly. "Jesus Christ. Kath... are you sure you want to pull this pin?"

May you like

"The pin was pulled the moment he lied about where he was standing," she replied, standing up and smoothing her gray wool skirt. "Bring the file to Hargrove. Tell him I’m formally invoking Article 4 emergency compliance procedures. By noon, I want every asset tied to Bracken Ridge locked tight."

As Marcus hurried off toward the executive suites, Katherine felt a strange lightness in her chest. For a decade, she had kept herself small to accommodate Reginald's fragile ego. Today, she was going to dismantle his entire empire piece by piece.
