Chapter 17 - An Unexpected VisitorThree months after the federal takeover and restructuring of First Meridian, Katherine’s new life had settled into a powerful, unbreakable rhythm. Under her leadership, the bank had successfully purged its corrupt assets, restored public trust, and implemented the most rigorous compliance standards in the banking sector.

It was a crisp autumn afternoon when her executive assistant buzzed through the desk intercom.

"Ms. Whitfield? There’s a visitor in the ground-floor lobby insisting on seeing you. He doesn't have an appointment, but... he says it’s urgent."

"Who is it?" Katherine asked, reviewing a quarterly audit report.

"His name is Reginald Whitfield."

Katherine paused, her pen hovering over the paper. A strange, detached calm settled over her. For months, she hadn't heard a word about him; rumor had it he was living in a cheap rental apartment across town, working odd jobs while dodging civil lawsuits from his former construction partners.

"Send him up," Katherine said quietly. "Let’s see what he has to say."

Ten minutes later, the heavy glass doors of her executive suite opened. Reginald walked in, but the man standing before her was a shadow of his former self. His tailored suits were long gone, replaced by a frayed jacket and worn shoes. His posture was slumped, and deep dark circles shadowed his hollow eyes.

"Katherine," he whispered, his voice trembling as he stopped a few feet from her desk. "I... I didn't know where else to go."
