Chapter 29 - The Final LedgerKatherine looked at her ex-husband, feeling an utter absence of anger, bitterness, or even pity. There was only the quiet clarity of someone reading a closed, finalized financial statement.

"Reginald," Katherine said, her voice steady and crystal clear against the morning breeze. "You spent ten years convincing me that I was small, that my work didn't matter, and that your ambitions were the only ones that counted. You built your entire life on sand, and when the tide came in, you blamed everyone except yourself."

Reginald swallowed hard, tears spilling over his weathered cheeks. "I was a fool. I gave up the best thing in my life for nothing. Can't you help me? Just a reference, a word to your legal team—something to keep me out of prison."

"No, Reginald," Katherine said softly, shaking her head. "I can't. And I won't."

She turned away from him, walking up the front steps toward the door to retrieve the final county documents from her briefcase inside.

"Is this karma, Katherine?" Reginald shouted behind her, his voice breaking with raw desperation. "Did you plan all of this from the very beginning?"

Katherine paused with her hand on the brass doorknob. She turned her head slightly back toward him, her expression calm and serene.

"No, Reginald," Katherine answered quietly. "I didn't plan your downfall. I only planned my own survival. You wrote your own ending the moment you decided to lie."

Without waiting for a reply, she opened the door, stepped inside, and closed it firmly behind her, locking the past away forever.
