Chapter 1 - The Splintered Door and the Iron King

The guards seized Naomi’s arms with brutal, reflex-trained efficiency, yanking her back just as the splintered oak doors of the music room were kicked entirely off their reinforced hinges with a deafening crash. The impact rattled the antique chandeliers overhead, raining a fine dust of plaster and varnish down onto the Persian rug.

Luca Moretti stood in the shattered doorway, a terrifying silhouette carved out of shadow and rage. He was still wearing the dark, impeccably tailored wool coat he had worn to the riverfront summit, the lapels dusted with wet sleet from the Chicago winter. His face was an absolute mask of lethal stillness—the terrifying calm before a hurricane touches down. Not a muscle twitched in his jaw, but his eyes were black, dead, and entirely devoid of human mercy.

Before Luca could take a single step forward, Vivien Cole threw herself off the sofa, sobbing with theatrical, breathless precision. She slammed into his chest, clutching the lapels of his coat as tears streamed down her perfectly contoured face.

"Luca! Thank God you're here!" Vivien wailed, her voice trembling with manufactured hysteria. "It's Naomi! She completely lost her mind! I walked in and caught her trying to force your mother to sign fraudulent asset transfers, and when I tried to stop her, she attacked me, tore my dress, and started beating your mother!"

Luca did not touch his fiancée. He did not pull her close, nor did he offer a word of comfort. His gaze bypassed Vivien entirely, cutting through the air like a razor blade to lock directly onto Naomi.

Naomi stood ten feet away, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Her hair was tangled, her cheek was swelling from where Vivien had struck her, and her uniform sleeve was torn where Isabella’s fingernails had been dragged across the fabric. Yet she did not shrink back. She met Luca’s terrifying gaze with an unflinching, resolute defiance.
