Chapter 18 - The Courtroom’s Final Echo

Federal District Court, Northern District of Illinois.
The appeal hearing for Vivien Cole’s federal racketeering and conspiracy conviction lasted precisely twelve minutes. Judge Arthur Vance didn't even allow the defense counsel to finish their opening statement before slamming his gavel down.
"The motion for appeal is summarily denied," Judge Vance announced, his voice echoing sharply through the wood-paneled courtroom. "The weight of the forensic evidence, witness testimony, and verified financial manipulation leaves no shadow of a doubt regarding the defendant's guilt. The twenty-five-year sentence in maximum security stands without possibility of early parole."
Vivien sat at the defense table, her face hollow, her eyes dead and sunken. She looked across the aisle, hoping to see some sign of weakness, some crack in the armor of the Moretti legal team.
