Chapter 7 - The Shadow Throne

Within forty-eight hours, the Moretti syndicate underwent a brutal, terrifying purge. The rival faction that had attempted the riverfront bombing was dismantled from the top down; their assets were seized, their leadership eliminated, and their territory absorbed into the Moretti shipping monopoly before the week's end.

At the sprawling Moretti estate, a profound restructuring took place.

Naomi was no longer listed on the staff roster as a caretaker. By executive decree from the Don himself, she was moved from the servants' quarters into the master wing’s adjoining executive suite—not as a prisoner, but as the head of household operations and the sole, trusted confidante of Isabella Moretti.

The staff learned quickly that crossing Naomi Carter was equivalent to treason against Luca Moretti himself. When a senior caporegime attempted to question her authority in the east parlor, Luca had personally escorted the man to the gates with a pistol pressed against his temple, permanently banishing him from Chicago.

Naomi spent her afternoons playing chess and solving crossword puzzles with Isabella, learning the intricate, unspoken language of the estate, while spending her evenings reviewing corporate logistics ledgers with Luca in his private study.

What started as an employer-employee dynamic slowly warped into an unbreakable, forged-in-fire partnership. Luca found himself sharing secrets with Naomi that he had never told his closest capos—fears about the future, the weight of the family name, and the hollow emptiness of an empire built on blood. And Naomi, who had spent her life running from broken homes and unstable pasts, found an unshakeable fortress in the arms of the most dangerous man in America.
