Chapter 12 - Shadows of the Federal Penitentiary

The visiting room of the Metropolitan Correctional Center smelled of industrial bleach, wet coats, and unwashed despair. Vivien Cole sat on the bolted plastic chair, staring at her own reflection in the smeared reinforced glass partition. The door clicked open, and a federal guard escorted her only remaining visitor inside.

It wasn't a lawyer. It was Marcus Vance, a disgraced mid-level operative from the rival syndicate who had managed to avoid indictment by flipping on his bosses.

Vivien slammed her palm against the glass, her eyes wide with desperate rage. "You! You promised me the syndicate would back my play! You said Luca would be dead at the riverfront and the empire would be split fifty-fifty!"

Marcus looked at her with cold, flat indifference. He didn't sit down. He crossed his arms and stared down at her like a piece of garbage left on a sidewalk.

"The syndicate doesn't back losers, Vivien," Marcus said softly, his voice carrying clearly through the intercom speaker. "You underestimated Luca Moretti, and you completely miscalculated the maid. The moment you let her call him from that music room, your game was over. The bosses are currently feeding fishes at the bottom of Lake Michigan, and you’re spending the next three decades staring at concrete. Enjoy your stay."

Marcus turned his back and walked out of the room. Vivien screamed, pounding her fists against the glass until the guards rushed in and pinned her arms, dragging her back to her cell as she cursed the name of the woman she had tried to destroy.
