Chapter 17 - The Anniversary

One year after the wedding that cemented her place as the undisputed queen of the Chicago underworld, Naomi stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror in the master suite, adjusting the diamond-encrusted platinum band on her left ring finger.
The estate was preparing for a private, intimate celebration. No capos, no syndicate bosses, no political figures—just Isabella, Luca, Naomi, and their toddler son playing harmlessly with wooden blocks on the nursery rug.
A knock sounded at the door, and Luca stepped inside, dressed in a sleek charcoal tuxedo. He stopped in his tracks, his dark eyes softening as he took in her appearance in the emerald-green silk dress—the exact color she had worn the night he told her she had saved his empire.
"One year," Luca murmured, closing the distance between them and wrapping his arms around her shoulders, resting his chin in the crook of her neck. "Three hundred sixty-five days of listening to you run my shipping logistics better than my entire board of directors."
"Somebody has to keep you from declaring war on the entire East Coast every time a customs form is delayed," Naomi teased, turning in his embrace to look up into his dark, devoted eyes.

"I'd burn the East Coast to the ground if it meant keeping you safe," Luca whispered, his voice dropping into a fierce, absolute promise.
"I know," Naomi smiled, kissing his cheek. "And that's why I keep the ledger locked in my desk."
