Chapter 12 - THE MIDNIGHT FLIGHT

By 2:00 AM, the penthouse was quiet again.

The social worker and Thomas Mitchell were sitting in separate federal holding cells, their conspiracy completely dismantled before the sun could even think about rising. Lily had finally cried herself to sleep in the guest bedroom, her hand safely resting over her new silver-embossed notebook.

Sarah sat at the kitchen island, a cold cup of tea between her hands, staring blankly at the floor.

Michael walked up behind her, gently placing a warm cashmere blanket over her shoulders.

“You still have to go to London, don't you?” Sarah whispered, her voice cracking. “The board... they won't wait.”

“I have to go sign the restructuring papers, yes,” Michael admitted, pulling a chair close and sitting directly across from her, taking her cold hands in his. “The multi-billion-dollar acquisition closes on Friday. If I don't sign, the company goes into default, and thousands of jobs vanish.”

“And then?” Sarah looked up, her green eyes shimmering with unshed tears. “Does the billionaire go back to his penthouse, his endless meetings, his meetings across oceans?”

Michael reached out, his thumb gently wiping away a tear that had escaped down her cheek.

“Never,” Michael vowed, his voice thick with raw, absolute conviction. “I’m flying to London on my private jet at dawn. I will sign the papers, fire every single disloyal executive on the board, restructure the European division by Wednesday night, and be back in Boston by Thursday morning. Forty-eight hours, Sarah. That’s all I need.”

Sarah searched his eyes, reading the fierce, unwavering truth written there. She leaned forward, resting her forehead against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart.

“Hurry back,” she whispered. “We’ll be right here.”
