Chapter 10 - THE CHOICE

Chaos erupted in the penthouse hallway.

Lily woke up crying, bolting off the sofa and running straight into Sarah’s arms. “Mommy! Make him go away!”

“You can’t be here, Thomas! There’s a restraining order!” Sarah shouted, shielding Lily behind her.

The corrupt social worker stepped forward, waving a clipboard. “Mrs. Mitchell, by federal review of emergency petition 44-B, the child is remanded to temporary protective custody pending a psychiatric evaluation of your new living arrangements with Mr. Thornton.”

Michael stepped between them, his towering frame blocking their path, his green eyes burning with cold, lethal fury.

“You forged that document,” Michael said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, quiet register that made strong men tremble. “And the moment you step one foot closer to Lily, I will personally ensure your license is revoked before morning.”

Thomas laughed hysterically, pulling a hidden phone from his pocket. “You think you’re untouchable, Thornton? Look at your live news feed right now!”

Michael glanced at his smart-tablet on the counter. The financial news broadcast was flashing a breaking headline:

THORNTON ENTERPRISES BOARD OF DIRECTORS THREATENS HOSTILE TAKEOVER VOTE IN LONDON AMID CEO’S 'ERRATIC PERSONAL CONDUCT' SCANDAL.

Beside it was a paparazzi photograph of Michael leaving Sarah’s apartment building earlier that week.

“Your board is staging a coup while you play hero in Boston,” Thomas sneered. “You have forty-eight hours to board that private jet to London and save your empire... or stay here and watch me tear this family apart through the courts piece by piece.”

Michael stood frozen in the center of the room, looking at the crying child, the woman who had brought his dead heart back to life, and the flashing headlines of the empire he had built.

He had to make a choice: save his billion-dollar legacy in London, or stay and fight for the family he never thought he’d have.
