Chapter 7 - THE SHADOW LINGERS

Outside the courthouse steps, the autumn wind whipped past the granite pillars.

Sarah buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking as the sheer, crushing weight of the past five years finally lifted off her chest. She sank against the stone pillar, crying tears of pure, unadulterated release.

Lily hugged her mother’s waist, looking up with wide, shining eyes. “Does that mean he can't ever take me away again?”

“Never again, sweetheart,” Michael said, kneeling down so he was eye-level with the little girl. He pulled a small, neatly wrapped box out of his coat pocket. “Your mother and I spoke with your teacher. We thought you might need a new notebook for your science projects. The blue one, since blue is scientifically superior.”

Lily gasped, ripping open the paper to reveal a custom leather-bound journal with her initials stamped in silver. “It’s beautiful! Thank you, Michael!”

Sarah wiped her eyes, looking down at Michael with a gaze so full of raw, trembling emotion that it made his breath catch. “I don't know how I’ll ever repay you, Michael. You saved us.”

“You don't have to repay me,” Michael said softly, standing up and offering her his arm. “Just let me take you both to dinner. Somewhere quiet. Where the only thing we have to worry about is what flavor of ice cream to order.”

As they walked toward the waiting Bentley, none of them noticed a silver sedan idling across the street, its engine humming. Inside, Thomas Mitchell’s eyes burned with a dark, unhinged fury as he watched the billionaire slide his arm gently around Sarah’s waist.

You think you won, Thornton? Thomas whispered to himself, shifting the car into gear. We’ll see who has the last laugh.
