Chapter 9 - THE ULTIMATUM

That evening, after Lily had fallen asleep on the living room sofa clutching her silver-embossed notebook, Michael sat across from Sarah at the marble kitchen island.
The silence between them was heavy, fractured by the ticking of the wall clock.
“London,” Sarah whispered, her green eyes shimmering with unshed tears as she looked down at her coffee mug. “That’s... that’s a long way from Boston.”
“It’s temporary,” Michael said quickly, reaching across the counter to cover her hand with his. His thumb stroked her knuckles. “Six months, Sarah. That’s all. I’ll fly back every two weeks on the private jet. Or better yet... come with me. Both of you. Let me set you up in Mayfair. Let me take care of you.”
Sarah pulled her hand back gently, a bittersweet smile touching her lips.
“Michael, I’m a nurse at Massachusetts General. I have a life here, a community, patients who depend on me. I can’t just pack up and become a billionaire’s accessory in London.”
“You wouldn't be an accessory, Sarah. You’re... you’re my life now,” Michael said, the raw confession slipping out before he could stop it.
Sarah looked up, her heart aching. She loved him—she knew she had fallen for the broken, gentle giant behind the cold billionaire mask. But fear, born of a lifetime of struggle, held her back.
“If you go to London for six months, Michael, the world will pull you back in,” Sarah whispered, her voice breaking. “Your board, your empire, your old life. Distance changes things.”
“It won't change how I feel about you,” Michael vowed.
Before Sarah could answer, the front door’s smart-lock beeped violently.
The heavy mahogany door swung open.

Standing in the entryway, looking disheveled, wild-eyed, and smelling of pure vengeance, was Thomas Mitchell—and beside him stood a corrupt local social worker with a forged emergency custody injunction.
“Found you,” Thomas snarled, stepping past the threshold. “You thought you won in court, Thornton? While you were packing your bags for London, I filed a federal appeal based on parental endangerment. And until it’s settled... my daughter is coming with me.”
