Chapter 3 - THE TIES THAT BIND

The following morning, Michael sat behind his massive mahogany desk on the forty-second floor of Thornton Enterprises, staring blindly at a quarterly report.

He couldn't concentrate.

The image of Lily’s tear-stained face on the school steps kept flashing behind his eyelids, followed immediately by Thomas Mitchell’s venomous expression.

His private phone buzzed on the sleek marble surface.

It was an unknown number with a Boston area code.

Michael swiped to answer.

“Mr. Thornton?” a soft, exhausted voice asked.

Maxwell froze, recognizing it instantly. “Sarah?”

“I’m sorry to call you at work,” Sarah said, the sound of clinical monitors beeping faintly in the background. “I’m on a quick break at the hospital. I just wanted to... to apologize for last night. Thomas made a scene, and it wasn't fair to you after what you did for Lily.”

“You don't need to apologize, Sarah,” Michael said, his voice softening involuntarily. “Is Lily alright?”

“She’s shaken. She wouldn't eat her breakfast this morning,” Sarah sighed, a heavy weight dragging her words down. “Thomas has been gone for years, Michael. He walked out when the debts piled up. But yesterday afternoon, he showed up at our apartment building with a lawyer’s card and a demand for joint custody. He says if I don't give him access, he’ll sue me in family court. And without your kind of money, I can't afford a legal defense that can fight him.”

A cold, hard resolve clicked into place inside Michael’s chest.

“Sarah,” Michael said, his tone dropping into the authoritative register that terrified corporate boards. “Listen to me very carefully. You are not fighting anyone alone. My legal team will handle Thomas Mitchell before the sun sets today.”
