Chapter 5 - THE COURTROOM SHOWDOWN

The Suffolk County Family Court hallway smelled of floor wax and quiet desperation.

Sarah sat on a hard wooden bench outside Courtroom 3B, wringing her hands, her face pale under the fluorescent lights. Lily sat beside her, resting her head against her mother’s shoulder, clutching a small, worn notebook.

When Michael stepped out of the private elevator, dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit flanked by two senior corporate attorneys carrying leather briefcases, heads turned instantly.

Sarah looked up, shock and relief warring in her eyes. “Michael... you didn't have to come.”

“I told you I would show up,” Michael said, sitting down on the bench beside them and gently touching Lily’s shoulder. “Hey, kiddo. How are you holding up?”

“I don't want to live with him,” Lily whispered fiercely. “He smells like smoke and he yells at my mom.”

Before Michael could answer, the double doors of the courtroom swung open. Thomas Mitchell strode out, flanked by a low-rent divorce lawyer who looked like he spent more time chasing ambulance sirens than reviewing case files. Thomas sneered when he saw Michael.

“Well, look at the billionaire playboy,” Thomas mocked loudly, loud enough for the bailiff to eye him warningly. “Bringing in the heavy artillery to bully a working-class father.”

“You aren't a father, Thomas. You’re a parasite,” Michael said smoothly, not even standing up, his sheer presence radiating a chilling dominance. “And by the time we walk out of that courtroom, you won't even have the right to look at this child.”
