Chapter 16 - The Downfall of DianeWhile Jessica and her father were being processed downtown, the matriarch of the Morrison family was experiencing her own special kind of hell.

Diane Morrison, who had spent her entire life sipping champagne at exclusive country clubs and looking down her nose at everyone around her, was now sharing a temporary holding cell at the municipal precinct.
The cell was cold, smelling faintly of bleach and cheap disinfectant. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead with an annoying, high-pitched whine.
"Do you know who I am?!" Diane shrieked for the fifth time that hour, rattling the iron bars with her manicured hands, which were now chipped and dirty. "I am Diane Morrison! My son is Brendan Morrison! You can't put me in here! Get me a phone! Get me my lawyer!"
"Lady, shut up," the bored desk sergeant muttered without looking up from his crossword puzzle. "Your lawyer quit an hour ago, your son is sleeping in a dumpster behind a Wendy's, and your company was bought out for a dollar by Apex Global."

Diane’s knees buckled. She slid down the cold steel bars, hitting the concrete floor with a pathetic thud. Her expensive silk blouse was stained, her hair was a tangled bird's nest, and the reality of her total, irreversible ruin finally crushed down on her chest like a physical weight.
She had won nothing. She had lost everything. And it was entirely her own fault.
