Chapter 9 - The Final VerdictThe officers reached our booth, grabbing Brendan by the shoulders and hauling him upright.

"Come on, pal. Move along. You're harassing the customer," the officer ordered firmly, dragging a weeping, broken Brendan toward the exit.
"Cassidy! CASSIDY!" Brendan screamed, flailing as he was hauled out into the cold night rain. The diner door swung shut, cutting off his desperate cries.

The waitress walked over, looking sympathetic as she wiped down the counter. "Rough night for some people, huh? You okay, honey?"
I smiled warmly, placing a hundred-dollar bill on the table—keeping the change for myself. "I'm better than okay," I said softly, resting a hand on my growing bump. "I'm finally free."
