Chapter 8 - A Taste of Their Own MedicineI set my teacup down on the saucer with a soft clink.

"Mercy?" I repeated, my voice ice-cold. "Is that what you showed me when your mother poured freezing water over my head while I was carrying your child? Is that what you showed me when you laughed and told me I was a burden?"
Brendan flinched, opening his mouth to stammer an excuse, but I cut him off.
"You called me a poor, pregnant burden," I whispered, leaning forward so only he could hear. "You thought you had all the power in the world because you had a last name and a bank account that belonged to me. Well, now you know what it truly feels like to have nothing."
Across the diner, two police officers in uniform looked up from their coffee cups, noticing the disheveled man harassing a patron.
"Get away from her, sir," one officer called out, standing up and resting a hand on his holster.

Panic flashed in Brendan’s eyes. He grabbed my coat sleeve with trembling fingers. "Cassidy, wait! The baby—think about our baby! Don't you want her to have a father?"
"My daughter will have everything she needs," I said, gently pulling my sleeve from his filthy grip. "Starting with a mother who has enough self-respect never to let a parasite near her again."
