Chapter 18 - Shadows in the Mirror

Weeks passed, and the storm clouds over Vance Holdings finally parted, leaving the empire stronger and more dominant than ever. Claire’s leadership of the real estate division was lauded across every major financial publication, cementing her status not just as Julian Vance’s wife, but as a corporate titan in her own right.
One evening, while Julian was detained late in a board meeting across town, Claire decided to visit the private art gallery on the ground floor of the Vance Tower.
The gallery was quiet, illuminated by soft, recessed track lighting. As she walked past a collection of modern abstract paintings, a sudden movement near the service exit caught her eye.
She paused, her heart skipping a beat.
Standing half-shadowed by a massive marble pillar was a thin, disheveled figure in a cheap gray hoodie. The hood fell back, revealing hollow cheeks, wild eyes, and a terrifyingly familiar face.
Ethan.
"Hello, Claire," Ethan whispered, his voice raspy and cracked, like dry leaves scraping across pavement. He took a slow, unsteady step toward her.

Claire didn't run. She stood her ground, her chin lifting with icy composure. "How did you get in here, Ethan? Security will have you arrested within seconds."
"Security?" Ethan let out a bitter, manic laugh, stepping closer. He pulled his hand out of his hoodie pocket, revealing a heavy, dull silver letter opener he must have picked up from a nearby reception desk. "Security can't save you now, Claire. You took everything from me. You and that monster."
