Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Power

When Claire clawed her way back to consciousness, she wasn't on the freezing floor of the bus. The scent of burnt rubber and panic had been replaced by the rich, intoxicating aroma of aged leather, rain-washed air, and expensive sandalwood.

She gasped, her eyes snapping open to the sight of a vaulted ceiling upholstered in midnight-blue starlight fiber optics. She was lying across the plush leather backseats of an ultra-luxury Maybach. A towering, impeccably dressed man with stark silver-streaked dark hair and eyes the color of a winter storm sat opposite her, his expression carved from granite.

"Don't move," Julian Vance commanded, his voice cutting through her panic like a scalpel. "Your breathing is erratic. Relax your diaphragm."

Claire clutched her swollen stomach, a fresh wave of pain making her vision blur. "My... my babies..."

"They are coming," Julian stated calmly, not a single trace of panic in his demeanor. He pressed a button on the armrest. "Marcus, step on it. We are bypassing St. Jude's. Take her directly to New York Presbyterian’s private VIP maternity wing. Alert Chief Surgeon Vance that I am bringing a priority patient."

Claire stared at him, her chest heaving. "Who... who are you?"

"Julian Vance," he replied smoothly, unbuttoning his bespoke suit jacket and draping it over her shivering shoulders. "And you, Mrs. Mercer, are going to survive tonight."

She froze. "You know who I am?"

"Ethan Mercer is a foolish man who trades in cheap real estate and fragile loyalty," Julian murmured, his gaze dropping momentarily to her wedding ring—the very ring Ethan had bought her during their honeymoon in Capri. A cold, predatory smile touched the corner of Julian’s mouth. "And tonight, your husband is about to learn what it costs to throw away something irreplaceable."
