Chapter 4 - The Crimson Altar

The transition from the Maybach to the sterile, high-tech operating theater of New York Presbyterian felt like falling through a wormhole. Nurses in crisp blue scrubs moved with military precision around Claire, their movements coordinated by an invisible, absolute authority: Julian Vance.

"Heart rate is dropping on twin B!" a resident yelled, panic flashing across her face.

"Stabilize her," a commanding voice echoed from the doorway. Chief Surgeon Dr. Richard Vance—Julian’s uncle—strode into the room, his gloved hands held high. "We are performing an emergency Caesarean section immediately. Prepare the incubators."

Claire clutched the edge of the operating table, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as the bright surgical lights burned into her eyes. An anesthesiologist pressed a mask to her face. "Count backward from ten, Claire."

"Don't let them die," she whispered, her fingers blindly reaching out into the empty air.

A large, warm, heavily calloused hand closed firmly over hers. Julian Vance stood right beside her shoulder, having scrubbed in just moments prior. His dark eyes locked onto hers with terrifying intensity.

"They won't," Julian said, his voice a steady anchor in the storm. "I don't lose investments, Claire. And neither do you."

Darkness rushed in, but this time, it was laced with the fierce, unyielding anchor of his grip.
