Chapter 7 - The Lion’s Den

Four days later, Ethan Mercer stormed through the double glass doors of the Manhattan Family Court, his face pale with fury and panic. Reporters swarmed the courthouse steps like a plague of locusts, flashing cameras blinding him as they shouted questions about the sudden collapse of Mercer Development.
He pushed his way into the corridor, only to freeze dead in his tracks.
Standing outside Courtroom 3B was Claire.
She didn't look like the broken, rain-soaked pregnant woman who had sobbed on the sidewalk a week ago. She was wearing a bespoke, structured ivory wool coat, her hair swept into an elegant chignon, her posture radiating an icy, untouchable grace.
And standing directly beside her, with one hand resting casually on the small of her back in a gesture of absolute, possessive protection, was Julian Vance.
Ethan’s vision went red. He lunged forward, his fists clenched. "Claire! What the hell is the meaning of this?! You colluded with this psychopath to steal my company?!"
Julian didn't even flinch. He slowly turned his head, his cold, piercing grey eyes locking onto Ethan like a predator sizing up a wounded rabbit.
"Keep your voice down, Mercer," Julian said, his voice cutting through the corridor with lethal quietness. "You are addressing the primary shareholder of what used to be your empire."
"She’s my wife!" Ethan screamed, trying to push past Julian’s towering frame.
"Not anymore," a calm, chillingly familiar voice announced from behind them.
Judge Sterling stepped out of the chambers holding a thick stack of legal briefs. She looked at Ethan with undisguised contempt. "Mr. Mercer, your divorce decree was finalized ten minutes ago via expedited default judgment. Furthermore, due to fraudulent asset transfer, financial abandonment of a high-risk pregnancy, and systemic corporate embezzlement, you have been stripped of all executive authority over Mercer Development."

Ethan staggered backward, his knees trembling. "No... no, that's impossible! That company is my life!"
"It was," Julian corrected softly, pulling Claire slightly closer against his side. "Now, it's just my latest acquisition. And as for Claire and the children... they belong to me."
