Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Crown

Three months later, the private courtyard of the Vance estate was bathed in the brilliant, warm light of a late spring afternoon. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom, drifting like pink snow across the manicured lawns.

Claire sat on a wrought-iron garden bench, watching as three tiny, giggling toddlers—now robust, walking, and full of chaotic life—chase a golden retriever across the grass, safely corralled by a smiling team of nannies.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind her.

Julian walked up, unbuttoning his suit jacket as he sat beside her on the bench. He reached out, taking her hand and gently rubbing his thumb over the heavy Kashmir sapphire ring that caught the sunlight.

"The federal prosecutor just called," Julian said quietly, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Ethan’s trial concluded an hour ago. Multiple counts of harassment, parole violation, and attempted assault. He won't be seeing daylight for a very long time."

Claire let out a long, shuddering breath she felt like she had been holding for the last year. She leaned her head against Julian’s broad shoulder, feeling the solid, unyielding strength of the man who had pulled her out of the storm and built her a kingdom.

"Good," Claire murmured, closing her eyes as the warm breeze brushed her face. "Let him fade into the shadows where he belongs."

Julian wrapped his arm tightly around her shoulders, pressing a soft kiss to the crown of her head as he looked out across the lawn at their children.

"Some people are born to break," Julian whispered, his voice steady and fiercely protective. "And some are born to rule. We built an empire out of the ashes, Claire. And no one will ever touch us again."
