Chapter 9 - Ashes to Empire

The rain pelted against the dirty glass window of a cheap, rundown diner in Queens. Ethan Mercer stared down into a cold cup of black coffee, his designer suit wrinkled and stained, his stubble unkempt. The tabloids had already moved on to the next scandal, but the federal prosecutors hadn't. His bank accounts were empty, his associates had turned state's evidence, and his name was a toxic waste dump in the financial world.
Across the street, a massive digital billboard lit up the rainy night sky.
Ethan slowly raised his eyes.
On the screen flashed a glowing financial headline: Vance Holdings Announces Record-Breaking Merger, Appoints Claire Vance as Chief Executive Officer of Mercer Real Estate Division.

Below the headline was a breathtaking photograph of Claire. She stood tall, radiant, and impossibly powerful beside Julian Vance on the grand staircase of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, wearing a breathtaking midnight-blue gown that shimmered under the flashbulbs. She didn't look like the terrified, broken woman he had kicked out into the storm. She looked like a queen ruling an empire.
Ethan slammed his fist onto the sticky laminate table, a strangled sob tearing from his throat. He had thrown away a kingdom for a fleeting shadow, and now, he was nothing more than a ghost watching from the outside.
