Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Apex

Miles away from the chaotic chaos of the bridge, inside the soundproof, bulletproof sanctuary of a sleek Maybach speeding through the financial district, Julian Vance sat in absolute silence. To the business world, Julian was a phantom—a ruthless venture capitalist who bought corporations for sport, dismantled corrupted empires, and ruined rivals with a single stroke of a pen. He was feared, untouchable, and utterly merciless.
His phone buzzed against the mahogany console. It was his chief of security, Marcus.
"Sir, we have an unexpected delay near the Williamsburg Bridge," Marcus reported, his voice tight over the encrypted line. "A public transit bus has stalled. Medical emergency on board. Traffic is completely locked down."
Julian didn't blink. His dark, sharp eyes remained fixed on the rain-streaked window. "Clear it. I have a meeting with the municipal zoning board in twenty minutes, and I do not like being late."

A strange, inexplicable flicker of intuition—something cold and ancient—stirred behind Julian's ribs. He hated inconveniences, yet something about the phrasing multiple births made his jaw tighten. "Move the car forward," Julian commanded, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that brooked zero argument. "If the city's paramedics can't reach her, we will."
