Chapter 14 - The Whispering Gallery

The Grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel buzzed with the cream of New York society. Flashbulbs strobed continuously as the doors swung open, and the crowd collectively held its breath.

Julian Vance stepped through first, immaculate in a midnight-blue tuxedo, his presence commanding absolute obedience from the room. But all eyes—and cameras—instantly shifted to the woman on his arm.

Claire wore a backless, emerald-green silk gown that cascaded down her frame like liquid jewels, accented by the massive Kashmir sapphire ring on her left hand. She moved with the quiet, devastating grace of a monarch who knew the entire room belonged to her.

As they descended the grand staircase, a society columnist whispered loudly nearby, "Is that the former Mrs. Mercer? Rumor has it Julian completely bankrupted her ex just to clear her path."

Claire didn't flinch. She locked eyes with the gossiping socialite, offering a cool, untouchable smile that made the woman instantly look away.

Julian leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of her ear. "You look breathtaking, Mrs. Vance."

"Thank you, Mr. Vance," she replied softly, accepting a flute of sparkling water from a passing waiter. "Though I think half this room is terrified of me."

"Good," Julian murmured, his gaze sweeping the room like a hawk. "Fear keeps them polite."
