Chapter 5 - Three Cries in the Dark

The sterile white lights of the recovery suite felt blinding when Claire finally opened her eyes hours later. The rhythmic, monotonous beep of a heart monitor provided the only soundtrack to the quiet room. Her body felt hollow, aching, and shattered.
She bolted upright, a sharp gasp escaping her lips. "My babies!"
"Rest."
Julian sat in a leather armchair in the corner of the dim room, a heavy leather-bound portfolio open on his lap. He looked as though he hadn't slept a wink, yet his posture was immaculate.
"They're alive," Julian said quietly, standing up and walking toward the bed. Behind him rolled three state-of-the-art neonatal incubators, each glowing with soft blue monitoring lights.
Claire choked back a sob as she looked inside. Three tiny, fragile bundles, no larger than a grown man's forearm, rose and fell with impossibly delicate breaths. Two girls and a boy.
"They were born premature, weighing just over two pounds each," Julian explained, standing beside her bed and looking down at the infants with an unreadable expression. "The medical staff gives them a fighting chance. Thanks to my intervention, they have the finest pediatric specialists in the country assigned exclusively to their care."

Claire looked up at him, tears blurring her vision. "Why? You don't even know me. Why go to all this trouble?"
Julian leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a low, magnetic register. "Because, Claire, I have spent the last five years watching Ethan Mercer destroy every partnership he touches. And today, he handed me the greatest opportunity of my life." He pulled a crisp, folded document from his pocket and laid it gently across her blanket. "Sign this power of attorney, and watch what happens when a real man takes care of you."
