Chapter 11 - The Echoes of the Past

The morning sun hit the iron gates of the Rickai estate with a blinding glare, but inside the master study, the atmosphere was thick with a new kind of tension. Dante Rickai stood by the towering oak desk, staring down at a manila folder that Viktor had just slammed onto the mahogany surface. The federal indictments against Julian Vance had sent shockwaves through the international underworld, but empires like Vance’s rarely died cleanly—they fractured, and the pieces always scattered into dangerous corners.

"The federal raid on Vance’s secondary warehouse in Zurich yielded unexpected cargo," Viktor said, his voice clipped and urgent. "We found financial records pointing to a silent partner. Someone who funded Vance’s personal vendetta against you, Boss. Someone who hasn’t surfaced yet."

Dante didn't flinch. His jaw tightened, the silver at his temples catching the morning light as he flipped open the folder. The documents inside were heavily redacted, but one name stood out at the bottom of a wire transfer authorization: The Consortium of Seven. It was a ghost syndicate, a shadowy alliance of European arms dealers and corrupted politicians whom Dante had systematically locked out of the Mediterranean shipping lanes a decade ago.

"They aren't just looking for revenge," Dante murmured, his voice cold as ice. "They want the shipping routes back. And they think a domestic vulnerability makes me weak."

Down the hall, the sound of tiny, rapid footsteps broke the silence of the heavy air. The heavy oak door, which now remained perpetually unlatched, swung open. Sophia trotted in, dragging her yellow blanket by its worn corner, her dark curls bouncing in two lopsided puffs. She stopped dead in her tracks, looking up at Dante with wide, solemn brown eyes.

"Mr. Dante," she announced, her voice piping through the quiet room. "My tummy is making roaring noises again. Like a lion."

The dark, predatory sharpness in Dante’s eyes instantly dissolved, replaced by a profound, grounding warmth. He walked around the desk, knelt down to eye level, and tapped her nose gently. "A lion, huh? Did you feed it breakfast, or is it still hungry?"

"It wants pancakes," Sophia declared seriously.

"Then pancakes it is," Dante said, scooping her up into his arms with an effortless strength. He looked up at Viktor, his expression hardening once more. "Double the internal watch. No one enters this estate without my direct authorization. If anyone from the Consortium thinks they can test me, let them try."

Meanwhile, three miles away, hidden in a nondescript black SUV parked off the private access road, a pair of cold, calculating eyes watched the estate through high-powered binoculars. Marcus—who had narrowly escaped the federal dragnet that captured Julian Vance—lowered the lenses. A slow, sinister smile crept across his scarred face.

"The boss was right," Marcus muttered into a satellite radio receiver. "Rickai thinks he’s playing domestic hero. He’s distracted. And a distracted king is a dead king."
