Chapter 27 - The Roots of the Empire

Three days after the aborted breach, the estate had returned to a strange, almost surreal sense of normalcy. The blood on the marble floor had been scrubbed away, the security vulnerabilities patched with military-grade encryption, and the traitorous kitchen assistant handed over to federal authorities along with the captured operatives.

Dante sat at the massive mahogany desk in his private study, but he wasn't looking at shipping manifests or tactical reports. Spread across the dark wood were old, heavy photograph albums—dusty relics from a life he had buried twenty years ago.

The door was cracked open, and soft, pattering footsteps signaled Sophia’s approach. She pushed the heavy wood open with both hands, dragging her yellow blanket behind her, and climbed uninvited onto the leather chair beside him, her chin barely clearing the edge of the desk.

"What's that?" she asked, pointing a small finger at an old black-and-white photograph of a young, hard-faced Dante standing outside a tenement building in the industrial slums of Chicago.

Dante looked down at the photo, a faint, melancholic smile touching his lips. "That's a ghost, Sophia."

"You look grumpy," she observed with total, unhesitating childish honesty. "Why were you grumpy?"

Dante let out a soft, low chuckle, leaning back in his leather chair. "Because I thought the whole world was a battlefield, little one. I thought if you didn't strike first, the world would destroy you."

"Did it destroy you?" she asked, tilting her head with innocent curiosity.

Dante reached out, gently tapping her nose. "Almost. Until a very noisy little girl knocked on my door and told me she was afraid of the thunder."

Lena appeared in the doorway, leaning against the frame with a soft, affectionate smile, holding two cups of tea. She had watched the transformation over the past months—from a cold, untouchable syndicate boss into a man who finally understood what it meant to belong to someone.

"You know," Lena said, walking over and setting a cup down on the desk before resting her hand gently on Dante’s shoulder, "you can't hide from your past forever by just building a bigger family, Dante. Eventually, the world outside these gates is going to demand an accounting. What happens when Viktor Vance stops sending mercenaries and decides to come himself?"

Dante covered Lena’s hand with his own, his calloused fingers locking securely around hers. He looked up, his dark eyes burning with absolute, unwavering resolve.

"Then we don't wait for him to come," Dante said quietly. "We end it. Once and for all."
