Chapter 13 - The Shadow Within

The afternoon shadows lengthened across the marble floors of the grand hallway as Lena paced anxiously inside the master suite. Sophia was sitting on the sprawling king-sized bed, quietly turning the pages of an animal picture book, completely oblivious to the danger closing in around them.

"Mommy," Sophia asked, looking up with big brown eyes. "Can we go outside and play with Mr. Dante later?"

"Later, sweetie," Lena forced a smile, though her hands were shaking as she stroked her daughter's dark curls. Her mind raced with terrifying scenarios. For years, she had fought to keep her life stable, safe, and away from the violence of the world. Now, she and her child were trapped in the eye of a war between ruthless men who viewed human lives as chess pieces.

A soft, distinct knock echoed at the heavy oak door of the suite.

Lena froze. She walked slowly toward the door, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Who is it?" she called out, keeping her voice as steady as possible.

“It’s Alina, dear. Open up.”

Lena exhaled a breath she didn't realize she was holding and unlocked the heavy brass deadbolt, pulling the door open. Alina Caruso stood in the hallway, holding a silver tray with a warm cup of chamomile tea. But something in Alina’s posture felt off. Her eyes were darting down the corridor, and her breathing was shallow.

"You shouldn't be locked in here all day," Alina said, stepping past Lena into the room without waiting for an invitation. "Mr. Rickai is being overly paranoid. A house like this has stood for forty years; it doesn't fall because of a threatening text."

Lena frowned, crossing her arms defensively. "Mr. Rickai is protecting us, Alina. Someone threatened Sophia."

Alina paused, setting the tray down on the mahogany side table. She turned to face Lena, her expression uncharacteristically strained. "Protection is just another word for a cage, Lena. And Dante Rickai has built a very expensive cage for both of you. Have you ever wondered what happens when he gets bored of his new toy?"

Lena’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"

Before Alina could answer, the door to the adjoining study flew open, and Dante stepped out. His eyes were cold, fixed entirely on the housekeeper.

"She isn't talking about boredom, Alina," Dante said softly, his voice cutting through the air like a razor blade. "She's talking about the fact that you haven't used the staff elevator in the east wing in six months, yet your security keycard was just used to ping the outer perimeter gate twenty minutes ago."

Alina froze, all color draining from her face.
