Chapter 29 - The Journey to the Lion's Den

The private Gulfstream jet cut through the stormy night skies over the Alps, its black fuselage reflecting the pale flash of lightning against the clouds. Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the casual domesticity of the estate. Dante Rickai sat in a leather armchair, cleaning a suppressed sidearm with methodical, mechanical precision. Across the aisle, Viktor and three elite security operatives checked their tactical rigs in grim, absolute silence.

Lena sat a few rows back, holding Sophia, who had fallen asleep wrapped tightly in her yellow blanket against the hum of the jet engines. Lena’s face was pale, her fingers tracing the edge of the blanket. She looked up as Dante walked back from the cockpit, his dark suit jacket off, his shirtsleeves rolled up, looking every bit the dangerous syndicate lord she had been warned about six months ago.

"Dante," Lena whispered, her voice tight with anxiety. "Why are we on this plane? Why didn't we just stay behind the gates? We were safe there."

Dante stopped in front of her, kneeling down so his eyes were level with hers. He reached out, gently placing his hand over hers, stopping her nervous trembling.

"We were safe, Lena, but safety isn't a hiding place," Dante said softly, his voice steady and reassuring. "Viktor Vance thinks he can reach past my gates by hunting ghosts in your past. I built my entire life on the idea that if you hide behind enough walls, no one can hurt you. But I was wrong. The only way to end a war is to walk straight into the enemy's camp and burn it to the ground."

Lena looked deep into his dark, unwavering eyes, seeing not the cold monster the underworld whispered about, but a man who had finally found something worth fighting for—something worth risking everything to protect. She swallowed hard and nodded. "Bring him home, Dante."

Two hours later, the jet touched down on a private, snow-swept airstrip hidden in the mountains outside Geneva. A convoy of three black armored SUVs was waiting on the tarmac, their headlights cutting harsh beams through the falling snow.
