Chapter 28 - The Final Directive

Inside the subterranean bunker in Geneva, Viktor Vance slammed his fist onto the stainless-steel console, shattering a glass of scotch across the floor.

"Kaelen failed?!" Vance roared at the trembling communications officer standing across the room. "He was our best operative! He bypassed three security checkpoints and got neutralized in a hallway?!"

"Rickai anticipated the HVAC vector, sir," the officer stammered, his face pale. "Our inside asset was compromised within minutes. The entire team... captured or eliminated."

Vance breathed heavily, his chest heaving with cold, calculated rage. He walked over to the reinforced glass wall that overlooked the snowy pine forest, his reflection staring back at him with the manic desperation of a cornered animal. He had invested millions into the Consortium’s remnants, trying to reclaim the Mediterranean shipping lanes and avenge his brother Julian. Now, his best men were gone, his digital footprint was exposed, and Dante Rickai was still standing behind his iron gates, untouched and unbreakable.

"If we can't breach the estate," Vance muttered to himself, a dark, dangerous light entering his eyes, "we draw him out into the open. We strike where his new life is vulnerable."

"Sir?" the officer asked cautiously. "What do you mean?"

"Find out where Lena Moretti’s family is," Vance ordered, turning around with a chilling, predatory smile. "Find every living relative, every friend, every fragile thread connecting her to her past before she walked into Rickai’s world. If Dante wants to play domestic protector, we'll see how well he protects a ghost town."

Back at the Rickai estate, however, Viktor’s intelligence network was already moving faster than Vance could type a command. Down in the basement command center, Viktor flagged an encrypted data stream originating from a proxy server in Zurich.

"Boss," Viktor said over the secure comms link to Dante’s private study. "Vance isn't retreating. We intercepted an automated database query targeting civil records in Lena’s hometown in Ohio. He's looking for leverage outside the estate."

Dante stood up from his desk so fast his chair rolled back and hit the bookshelf with a dull thud. The dark, lethal focus that had defined his reputation across the global underworld flashed back into his eyes—not as a shell, but as a weapon of absolute protection.

"He's looking for a backdoor," Dante said, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous whisper. "He thinks he can hurt Lena to get to me."

"What are your orders, Boss?" Viktor asked.

"Pack the tactical gear," Dante replied, his jaw set like carved granite. "We aren't waiting for him to make another move. We’re going to Geneva."
