Chapter 24 - The Ghost in the Culvert

Deep beneath the frost-covered grass of the estate’s northern boundary, the old stone drainage culvert—built during the estate’s construction a century ago and supposedly welded shut a decade prior—was silent. Or at least, it was supposed to be.

Kaelen moved through the damp, narrow concrete tube with the silent, practiced grace of a seasoned predator. His black tactical uniform blended seamlessly with the dripping shadows, his face smeared with matte camouflage paint. Behind him, two elite operatives crawled in absolute silence, carrying heavy modular cases filled with encrypted breaching charges and aerosolized chemical agents.

"Culvert terminal reached," Kaelen whispered into his throat-mic, his voice barely audible over the dripping water. "We're bypassing the primary security grid at the junction box. Give me thirty seconds to drop the smart-grid relays."

Inside the estate's high-tech basement command center, Viktor’s fingers flew across the multi-monitor console as warning lights began to blink from green to amber, then sharply to flashing crimson.

"Boss, they're not brute-forcing the perimeter," Viktor reported through Dante’s earpiece, his voice tight. "They're using a frequency jammer on the smart-grid relays at the northern junction. They're trying to blind our exterior thermal cameras and ventilation sensors simultaneously."

"Let them blind the cameras," Dante’s voice came back instantly, calm, icy, and entirely unhurried. He was standing in the center of the master hallway, having already secured Lena and Sophia inside the reinforced panic room behind the master suite—a space built with three-inch steel plating and independent air filtration. "If they come through the culvert, they come out right into the old service cellar beneath the east wing kitchen. That's a dead end."

"Not quite," Viktor muttered, watching a secondary diagnostic screen light up with a frantic warning. "Boss... look at the air intake logs for the east wing. They aren't just using the culvert for entry. They've deployed an aerosolized neurotoxin payload into the primary HVAC line."

Dante’s eyes narrowed into hard obsidian slits. "Seal the manual mechanical dampers. Cut all air exchange to the east wing immediately."

"Already on it, but... boss, the bypass valve was manually opened from the inside five minutes ago."

Silence dropped over the comm-line for a fraction of a second. Dante didn't need Viktor to spell it out. Another leak. Another compromised link in a house that had already bled from betrayal once before.
