Chapter 17 - A New Foundation

Two months slipped by with a strange, unprecedented peace settling over the Rickai estate. The iron gates remained, and the guards still patrolled the perimeter, but the atmosphere inside had fundamentally transformed. The cavernous rooms no longer echoed with oppressive emptiness; they echoed with the bright, running commentary of a three-year-old girl.
Dante had officially restructured his business empire, divesting from the grey-market syndicates and transitioning his capital entirely into legitimate global logistics and humanitarian shipping lines. The underworld whispered in disbelief that the great Dante Rickai was going soft, but none of them dared test the rumor after the total annihilation of Julian Vance and the Consortium.
On a crisp December morning, frost coated the grass outside the tall windows of the master suite. Sophia was sitting on the massive living room rug, building an impossibly tall tower out of wooden blocks, chattering away to herself.
Lena walked in carrying a tray of coffee and pastries, stopping to watch Dante, who was sitting cross-legged on the floor beside the toddler, patiently placing a red block on top of the leaning tower.
"If you place the weight too far to the left, it collapses," Dante instructed solemnly, his face entirely serious as if he were analyzing a high-stakes corporate merger.
"Nuh-uh!" Sophia giggled, giving the tower a gentle push that sent all twenty blocks crashing down across the Persian rug in a clattering explosion of wood. "It falls down on purpose!"
Dante let out a low, rumbling laugh—a sound so rare and genuine that Lena caught her breath, watching him from the doorway. The silver at his temples seemed softer against the morning light, and the rigid, frozen lines of his posture had entirely melted away.
"You're a terrible influence on my architectural integrity," Dante joked, looking up to meet Lena’s warm gaze.
May you like
"Architecture was never your strong suit, Mr. Rickai," Lena teased gently, walking over to hand him a cup of coffee. "You always preferred building walls rather than doors."
Dante took the cup, his fingers brushing hers. "I'm learning how to build doors now."
