Chapter 12 - The Unseen Invitation

The kitchen was a warm, bustling sanctuary compared to the cold marble corridors of the rest of the mansion. Mrs. Alina Caruso stood by the commercial stove, flipping golden-brown buttermilk pancakes with practiced precision, while Lena set out fresh butter and warm maple syrup on the central island.

When Dante walked in carrying Sophia on his hip, Alina paused, her stern features softening into a rare, knowing smile. Six months ago, the idea of Dante Rickai—the untouchable syndicate lord—standing in a domestic kitchen waiting for breakfast would have been treated as a sign of mass hallucination. Now, it was simply Tuesday.

"Pancakes are up," Alina announced, sliding a plate toward the high chair that had been permanently installed at the end of the kitchen counter.

Dante set Sophia down, pulling out a stool for himself right beside her. He reached for a cup of black coffee, but before he could take a sip, his encrypted phone vibrated against the wood. He glanced at the glowing screen. A text message from an unknown, untraceable number: The house is big, Dante. But a little girl is so very small to lose twice.

The coffee cup stopped halfway to his mouth. The air in the kitchen instantly plunged in temperature. Lena, who was pouring milk into a glass, noticed the sudden shift in Dante's posture. The blood drained from her face.

"Mr. Rickai?" Lena whispered, her voice trembling. "What is it?"

Dante didn't answer immediately. He locked his phone, his dark eyes darkening into obsidian pits. The threat wasn't just corporate anymore; it was personal, intimate, and directed right at the heart of the life he had built. He stood up slowly, pushing his stool back.

"Lena, take Sophia up to the master suite," Dante ordered, his tone leaving zero room for argument. "Do not leave the suite. Lock the heavy security deadbolts. Viktor is stationed outside your door."

"Dante, please—" Lena began, fear gripping her throat.

"Go," he commanded gently, though his eyes burned with a lethal resolve.

Within minutes, Dante was standing in the estate's high-tech security command center in the basement. Rows of high-definition monitors displayed every square inch of the perimeter. Viktor was tapping furiously at a keyboard, tracking the origin of the text ping.

"It bounced through three satellite relays in Eastern Europe," Viktor reported, his face grim. "Boss, whoever sent that text has a direct line to our internal comms loop. That means we have a leak. Someone inside the estate is passing intelligence to the Consortium."

Dante stared at the wall of screens, his mind working with the cold, calculating precision that had kept him alive for decades. A leak. In a house where every employee was vetted, paid a fortune, and terrified into absolute loyalty.

"Check the personnel logs for the past three weeks," Dante ordered quietly. "Find out who has access to the private residential wing."
