Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

Dante’s reaction wasn't rage. It was worse. It was the terrifying, absolute stillness of a hurricane eye before total devastation.
He picked up the note from the floor, his eyes scanning the handwriting twice. Viktor materialized in the doorway of the suite, breathless—a rare sight for the veteran operative.
"Boss," Viktor said quickly. "The messenger who dropped that note at the gate was picked up by our secondary patrol two miles down the road. He’s a low-level courier, but he cracked under pressure. He said the package was paid for by a wire transfer originating from a shell corporation tied directly to Julian Vance."
The name dropped into the room like a live grenade.
Lena clutched Sophia tightly to her chest, burying the toddler’s face into her shoulder so she couldn't hear. "Julian Vance? Who is that? Why does he want Sophia?"
Dante didn't answer Lena directly. He turned to Viktor, his voice cutting through the silence like a razor. "Vance thinks he’s playing chess. He thinks by dangling a threat over a child, he can draw me out into the open." Dante turned his dark, piercing gaze toward Lena, his expression softening just a fraction for her benefit. "You are safe here, Lena. Both of you. Vance will never touch her."
"He knows where we are, Mr. Rickai!" Lena cried, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "He sent a message directly to this house! How long before he sends men with guns?"
"Let him send them," Dante replied quietly, pulling his heavy titanium-framed phone from his pocket. "I’ve spent ten years letting Vance hide behind corporate facades and legal loopholes. If he wants to make this personal—if he thinks he can touch the only piece of humanity I’ve allowed into these walls—I will burn his entire syndicate to ash."
Three hundred miles away, in a sprawling industrial estate on the city's outskirts, Julian Vance stood over a bank of glowing monitors, watching a live thermal feed of Dante Rickai’s estate.

"He's reacting," Marcus said, grinning as he watched security patrols double around the perimeter on the screens. "The great Dante Rickai is scrambling his guards. He actually cares about the housekeeper's kid."
Julian took a slow sip of his scotch, his eyes gleaming with psychotic triumph. "Of course he cares. A man who has spent forty years building walls forgets how to defend a door that's already open. Send in the strike team at midnight. We take the child, we break Rickai's spirit, and then we take the empire."
