Chapter 26 - Echoes in the Stone

The gunshot didn't just sound; it dominated the space, rattling the antique chandeliers and scattering pigeons from the high stone cornices outside. Dante’s first round caught Kaelen’s weapon barrel dead-center, shattering the steel frame and spinning the carbine out of the mercenary's hands with brutal force. Before Kaelen could even stagger back, two of Dante’s security guards converged on the remaining operatives, sweeping their legs out from under them and slamming them against the marble floor before zip-tying their wrists with industrial precision.

Kaelen fell to his knees, clutching his mangled right hand, blood dripping onto the polished white stone. He looked up at Dante, his face twisted in a snarl of defiance and pain.

"You think this stops it, Rickai?" Kaelen spat, blood fleaking his lips. "Viktor Vance has a hundred more like us. You can't protect everyone. You can't live in a cage forever."

Dante walked slowly toward him, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the floor. He stopped right above the kneeling mercenary, looking down with an expression so cold, so utterly devoid of human emotion, that it made Kaelen’s blood run cold.

"I don't live in a cage anymore," Dante said quietly, raising the pistol just enough to press the cold steel frame against the side of Kaelen’s temple. "And I don't need to protect everyone. I only need to protect my home. And right now, you're tracking mud across my floor."

Viktor rounded the corner a moment later, breathless, holding a digital trace-pad. "Boss! We tracked the signal override on the HVAC bypass valve. It wasn't an external hack. The override code was punched in from a secure terminal in the basement auxiliary pantry."

Dante didn't take his eyes off Kaelen. "Who?"

"One of the new kitchen assistants hired during the background expansion last month," Viktor replied grimly. "She's already bolted toward the western exit, but our perimeter snipers have her cornered at the gate."

Dante lowered his pistol, stepping back and gesturing to the guards. "Drag them down to the holding cells. Interrogate the pantry leak, and find out every single drop of information Vance has on our logistics network. I want a complete sweep of Geneva by sundown."

As Kaelen and his men were dragged away, leaving trails of dark blood across the pristine white marble, Dante stood alone in the hallway for a long moment, listening to the deep, resonant silence of the house. It wasn't the suffocating, empty silence of his past; it was the quiet stillness of a fortress that had just successfully repelled a siege.

Upstairs, the reinforced steel door of the master panic room clicked open.

Lena stepped out into the hallway, holding Sophia tightly against her chest. The little girl was clutching her yellow blanket, her round brown eyes blinking with sleepy curiosity.

"Dante?" Lena called out, her voice trembling slightly as she scanned the empty, quiet corridor. "Is it... is it over?"

Dante turned around, holstering his weapon. As he walked toward them, the hard, predatory lines of his face dissolved completely, replaced by the warm, grounding presence that only they ever got to see.

"It's over," Dante said softly, stopping in front of them and gently reaching out to stroke Sophia’s dark curls. "The storm passed, Lena. Let's go make those pancakes."
