Chapter 19 - The Journey Out

The black armored Mercedes rolled smoothly through the iron gates of the estate, heading south toward the rugged coastline. For the first time in twenty years, Dante Rickai was leaving his fortress not for business, not for a meeting, and not for war, but for a weekend getaway with a three-year-old girl and her mother.

Sophia pressed her face against the tinted glass of the back seat, her eyes wide with wonder as endless green fields and rolling hills rushed past. She held her yellow blanket tightly in her lap, narrating every single cow, truck, and mailbox they passed in a breathless, excited stream of consciousness.

Lena sat beside her, glancing nervously out the window, though a quiet smile played on her lips. "Are you sure this is a good idea, Dante? Traveling with us out in the open... what if—"

Dante turned slightly from the front passenger seat, resting his arm on the console, his dark eyes steady and reassuring. "Viktor has a full tactical convoy tracking us two miles back and two miles ahead. But more importantly, Lena... I spent twenty years hiding behind walls. I'm not going to let ghosts dictate where I can take my family."

Family.

The word hung in the air between them, natural and unforced, carrying a weight of redemption that neither of them needed to speak aloud. Lena’s cheeks flushed slightly, and she looked down, her heart swelling with a quiet, overwhelming gratitude.

Two hours later, the car crested a high coastal ridge, and the endless, glittering expanse of the ocean opened up before them, crashing against rugged grey cliffs under a brilliant blue sky.

Sophia gasped, clapping her hands together. "Look! The water is bigger than the pool!"

As Dante stepped out of the car and opened the rear door, holding out his hand to help Sophia down onto the gravel path, a distant black drone hovered silently three hundred feet above them in the clouds, transmitting a high-definition live feed straight to a computer screen in Geneva.
