Chapter 12 - The Secret Asset

By dawn, my private security detail had uncovered a terrifying breach.
One of the newly hired night-shift security guards—a man named Victor Vance, unrelated to Marcus or Ashley—had vanished without a trace, leaving behind a burner phone synced to an external router hidden in the estate’s utility shed.
Marcus sat across from me in my home office, sliding a printout of the recovered phone logs across the desk.
"Victor was taking payoffs," Marcus said quietly. "Look at the incoming wire transfers. They originated from an offshore Cayman account tied to a shell corporation called Apex Holdings."
I narrowed my eyes, scanning the routing numbers. "Apex Holdings was dissolved by federal regulators during Michael's trial. How is it still active?"
"It’s not," a cool, unfamiliar voice echoed from the doorway.
We both snapped our heads toward the entrance. Standing in the doorway was Detective Miller, accompanied by two federal agents in tactical gear. Miller held up a fresh tablet displaying a freeze-frame from the estate's security camera feed.
"It’s active because someone else stepped into Michael’s shoes," Miller said, stepping into the room. "Elena, meet Julian Croft. Michael’s former college roommate, primary financial backer, and the silent partner behind your husband’s entire $50 million scheme."
The room seemed to tilt on its axis. "Julian Croft?" I whispered. "He was supposed to be in London."

"He was," Miller nodded. "Until your husband was convicted. Julian didn't care about Michael; he cared about the insurance payout. And now that Michael is out of the picture, Julian believes the entire fortune reverts to him through a hidden promissory note Michael signed weeks before the hike."
A cold fire ignited in my veins. There was no resting. The war wasn't over.
