The executive boardroom of Carter Global Holdings was brighter, warmer, and filled with brilliant portraits of innovation and leadership.
I sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, listening intently as my executive team presented our quarterly global expansion metrics. Stock prices were at an all-time high, the company was a beacon of corporate integrity, and my philanthropic foundations were actively supporting survivors of domestic and financial abuse across the country.
The heavy oak doors opened slightly, and a five-year-old boy with bright, curious eyes and a head of dark curls peeked inside, holding a small drawing of a mountain and a helicopter.

Every hardened executive board member instantly softened, smiling warmly at the little boy who had survived the unthinkable right alongside his mother.
I smiled, raising a hand to pause the meeting.
"Come in, sweetie," I said, my voice rich with warmth and unshakable power.
As Leo ran across the plush carpet and climbed happily into my lap, burying his face against my shoulder, I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the majestic peaks of the distant mountains rising proudly against the golden horizon.
