Chapter 8 - The Corporate Coup

Back at Carter-Vance Technologies, the board of directors had gathered in the executive boardroom for an emergency emergency restructuring meeting.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open as I walked in, carrying a fresh leather portfolio. Every board member stood up immediately, their expressions a mix of profound respect, awe, and cautious reverence.

"Welcome back, Elena," said Thomas Sterling, our senior venture partner, pulling out the primary seat at the head of the table for me. "The market has reacted overwhelmingly positively to your return. Stock prices are up 42% since the news broke that you survived the incident and purged the fraudulent elements from executive management."

"Thank you, Thomas," I said, taking my seat and placing my hands flat on the polished conference table. "Let’s get straight to business. I want all internal compliance protocols audited by an independent third-party firm. We are also terminating our contract with any subsidiary linked to Ashley Vance’s shell corporations."

"Consider it done," Thomas nodded, sliding a thick legal dossier toward me. "There is one more matter, Elena. Now that Michael’s shares have been legally forfeited under the forfeiture-of-assets clauses in your prenuptial agreement, the board wants to vote on officially renaming the enterprise to Carter Global Holdings, dropping his namesake entirely."

A quiet murmur of approval swept through the room.

I looked around the table at the people who had supported me through the darkest hours of my life—the ones who had sent rescue teams, managed operations while I was in trauma recovery, and stood by my side when I walked back into the light.

"Let's do it," I said firmly. "Let’s bury the past where it belongs."

As the vote passed unanimously, I looked out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse. Below us, the Denver skyline stretched out endlessly beneath a clear, brilliant blue sky. The peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park were visible in the far distance, snow-capped and majestic against the horizon.

They used to look like a tomb to me.

Now, they looked like a fortress.
